There are a variety of activities geared towards the progress of your child's development. For each stage or milestone including infancy, toddler, school age and as they grow up, there are a multitude of interactive and entertaining activities that will stimulate your child to learn, think and even talk, and read. Some are meant for the child alone, meaning that he/she can play with and occupy themselves with only a little parental supervision. Others are meant as a way to get the parent active in their child's development. In fact, there are also games and activities geared for a group of two or more children which are great for playgroups, daycare, and even older and younger siblings.
During the stage of infancy most activities are simple and sensory based. Light and noise make up a large base of what this subject can do. These toys are bulky in size and geared a lot toward the safety of your child, like using big pieces of blocks or toys with soft edges. Stuffed animals are a great way to help your child develop recognition of inanimate objects. These can also help to teach them the control needed in grasping or reaching for an object. However, stuffed animals should be kept out of your child's crib as they could be considered a hazard (smothering) to a sleeping child. Especially a newborn that cannot yet roll themselves over or really move themselves at will at all. Rattles and other such handheld toys are a great way to help a child develop motor skills as well. At infancy you are going to have to place the toy in the child's hand or use it yourself to direct the infants attention but as they grow they will soon develop the skills needed to play with it themselves.

During the toddler stages, toys and activities will begin to get more advanced. They will become something interactive in fact, it can seem at times that your child is even socializing with them. This is a great time to introduce your children to books. In fact, because of soft made plush books it would be a great experience for them to be introduced to them even earlier on, even if they really don't comprehend what it is. Stories are a great wind down activity that can be shared as a bedtime routine between parent and child. It will allow the child something sweet to think on before falling asleep and can be great for talking and teaching them as well.
Toys such as crayons and paper are a great way to stimulate your child's artistic side as well. Of course this will depend on the age. A child of two and three years and up will gain more fun from this then a younger one. Also, it may not be safe for a younger one, as they depend still more on sensory learning such as taste. It is never really a good idea to eat your crayons.
Again, there are a variety of child development tools available to start you and your child on the way to a happy future. Pick and choose what seems interesting to you but remember that your child is an individual themselves, so keep a broad range of activities and toys on hand, and let your child choose which is most interesting to them as well.
