A baby's first birthday is a great time of celebration. So, how do we celebrate? That depends. If your child is outgoing, he will love to have a party full of people and music. If you have extended family nearby, you can even ask them to help out with the party by bringing some food, decorating or keep an eye on the baby during the party. If you don't have a lot of kids in your family it might be a good idea to invite neighborhood children to make the party more exciting. It would be better to have the parents stay and help out with the children. Make sure to plan lots of games to keep everyone entertained.
However, if your child is shy he might not like a great big birthday.

Shy children don't like to be surrounded with many people and might end up clinging to mommy's leg instead of actually enjoying the party. If that's the case then it would be better to have a small celebration with only immediate family members.
Share the special moments with everyone.
Your baby's first birthday is a time to remember what it was like the first time you laid eyes on your child. Reminisce about your first weeks and months together, the sleepless nights, the face when he first took a bite of solid food, and the progression from sitting up, to crawling, and maybe even walking. It's wonderful to realize what an amazing life you've been a part of. When throwing a one year old party, you can share all of these special moments with the guests through creating a mural with lots of pictures. Another idea is to make a special scrapbook album of the first year and show it to guests at the party. If you have videos of your baby's first year you can also make a video clip to a special song to play during the birthday party.
Make sure to take lots of pictures of the party.
Even though your child will probably not remember the party, if you take pictures of it, he will have this memory for all of his life. Develop the pictures within the first month after the party. Whether you scrapbook or use a photo album, write down the first and last names of your guests and whatever you remember about the party. You can also make doubles of the pictures with the guests and send it to them as a souvenir with a thank you note.
Ideas for the gifts.
As far as presents go, you have a choice. You can leave the invitations blank in regards to gifts and let each guest choose the gift that they want to bring. If you have too much stuff, you can have something like this on the invitation: "Your presence is our present, please, no gifts". Another thing you can do is ask the guests to bring a can of food for your local shelter. That way you are celebrating and helping the needy at the same time.
